Scottish white terriers were recorded as early as the reign of James 1 of England (VI of Scotland), who reigned between 1567 and 1625. It was after a dozen dogs were procured from Argyll and gifted to the Kingdom of France that their popularity began to rise. However, it was not until 1908 that they were named the West Highland Terrier, to distinguish them for their uniquely white coat. Today this social breed of terrier is more commonly known as the Westie.
