The Labrador Retriever is one of several types of gun dogs developed in 19th century England for duck shooting.The predescessors of todays dogs were bred on the estate of the first and second Earls of Malmesbury. Also instrumental in establishing the original desired traits were the 5th and 6th Dukes of Buccleuch, and youngest son Lord George William Montagu-Douglas-Scott. A distinguishing trait is their webbed paws, useful for retrieving fishing nets.
