Around 1500, the word Bondogge or Bolddogge was first mentioned in literature and is the oldest spelling of the word Bulldog. In 1631 or 1632, in a letter by Preswick Eaton, he writes: “procuer mee two good Bulldogs, and let them be sent by ye first shipp”.
“Bull” referred to the dog’s use in the sport of bull baiting when dogs were released into a ring upon a tethered bull. The dog that took the bull, by the nose, to the ground was the victor.
