The Boxer was developed in Germany in the late 19th century from a crossing the Bullenbeisser, a now extinct dog of Mastiff descent, with English Bulldogs. For centuries, the Bullenbeisser was used as a hunting dog for bear, wild boar and deer. Its job was to seize and hold the prey until the hunters arrived. In later years, smaller, faster dogs were favored and a type of dog bred in Belgium became the standard and direct ancestor of today’s Boxer.
